The Guadalperal dolmen has been under the Valdecañas reservoir, Cáceres, since the 1960s. The lowering of the waters in 2019 brought it to the surface, causing an important media outcry. The institutions involved in the protection, safeguarding and research of the site are the Spanish Ministry of Culture and Sport, the Regional Government of Extremadura and the Tagus Hydrographic Confederation. They responded with a joint action plan, which was commended to the University of Alcalá.

More than 200 archaeological sites have been inventoried, recovering unpublished data on the megalithic occupation of the area. The intervention on the monument was preceded by geometrical documentation through the use of terrestrial laser scanning together with the collection of bathymetric data to confirm its stability. The results of the archaeological intervention carried out in July 2021 are under study.
